A Brief History of the Wesley United Methodist Church The Methodist Episcopal
Church South, in Sedalia, was organized in 1870 and a frame building was
erected at the northeast corner of Third and Massachusetts. In 1891 they built a larger building
at the corner of Fifth and Osage but in 1901 in had to be torn down and a new
building of red brick with cut stone trim and beautiful stained glass windows
was erected on the same site and named The Fifth Street Methodist Church. In 1949, due to the
growth of the church a building committee recommended that a church be built
on a new location on the northeast corner of Broadway at Carr. On May 16, 1954 the groundbreaking
service was held and on August 12, 1956 the first worship service was
held. A new name, Wesley
Methodist Church, was chosen by vote of the congregation. The Memorial Addition was added to
the building in 1968 and provided attractive classrooms and offices. The name of the church
was changed, once again, following the union of The Methodist Church and The
Evangelical United Brethren Church.
In order that we may be in harmony with our fellow Methodist, the name
was changed to Wesley United Methodist Church. We celebrated our centennial of this united church in
1970, our Silver Anniversary in this location in 1981 and our 75th
Anniversary in 2006. Thru Capital Improvement
initiatives we have updated and maintained the building over the years. The sanctuary was remodeled; and
handicapped accessibility was provided in 1986; the elevator was added in
1995. We expanded our physical
property by purchasing the property at 1315 Maple Lane which provided more
parking spaces and the house is being rented. Our current Capital Campaign will continue the updates and
add improvements that will bring us strongly into the 21st
Century. |
